Unity of India is every cop’s first duty: Haryana DGP Ajay Singhal

National Unity Day: Haryana DGP Ajay Singhal administers unity pledge to police

Chandigarh. Haryana’s top cop Ajay Singhal on Saturday told police personnel that the job of keeping the country united rests more heavily on them than on anyone else, as the force marked National Unity Day on the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Singhal, the Director General of Police (DGP), administered the National Unity Day pledge to senior officers and staff at the state Police Headquarters. Personnel turned out in strength and took part with enthusiasm.

Addressing the gathering, the DGP said every member of society must do their bit to protect the unity and integrity of India. For those in uniform, he said, that responsibility is even greater.

The first duty of every police officer, Singhal said, is to guard the nation’s unity and integrity, while serving the public with dedication and a strong sense of service and security. He urged the force to work with complete honesty, sincerity and commitment.

He asked personnel to draw inspiration from Patel’s ideals and to keep national interest above everything else while on duty. A disciplined, sensitive and duty-bound police force, he said, is key to a safe society and a strong nation.

Every police officer, the DGP added, must pledge to protect the nation’s unity and stay committed to public service in all circumstances.

Singhal also recalled Patel’s role in building the nation. Known as the Iron Man of India, Patel was the country’s first home minister and is credited with bringing hundreds of princely states into the Indian Union after Independence. His birth anniversary, October 31, has been observed as National Unity Day (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas) since 2014.

DIG (Law and Order) Abhishek Jorwal, AIG (Provisioning) Himanshu Garg, AIG (Administration) Shashank Sawan and DSP Mamta Sauda were among the officers present.
